YESTERDAY INDIA CELEBRATED MAHASHIVRATRI
Maha Shivaratri 2014 27th February 2014 (Thursday)
Shivaratri is great festival of convergence of Shiva and Shakti. Chaturdashi Tithi during Krishna Paksha in month of Magha is known as Maha Shivaratri according to South Indian calendar. However according to North Indian calendar Masik Shivaratri in month of Phalguna is known as Maha Shivaratri. In both calendars it is naming convention of lunar month which differs. However both, North Indians and South Indians, celebrate Maha Shivaratri on same day.
Vrat Vidhi – One day before Shivaratri Vratam, most likely on Trayodashi, devotees should eat only one time. On Shivaratri day, after finishing morning rituals devotees should take Sankalp to observer full day fast on Shivaratri and to take food next day. During Sankalp devotees pledge for self-determination throughout the fasting period and seek blessing of Lord Shiva to finish the fast without any interference. Hindu fasts are strict and people pledge for self-determination and seek God blessing before starting them to finish them successfully.
On Shivaratri day devotees should take second bath in the evening before doing Shiva Puja or visiting temple. Shiva Puja should be done during night and devotees should break the fast next day after taking bath. Devotees should break the fast between sunrise and before the end of Chaturdashi Tithi to get maximum benefit of the Vrat. According to one contradictory opinion devotees should break the fast only when Chaturdashi Tithi gets over. But it is believed that both Shiva Puja and Parana i.e. breaking the fast should be done within Chaturdashi Tithi.
Shivaratri puja can be performed one time or four times during the night. The whole night duration can be divided into four to get four Prahar to perform Shiva Puja four times. Drikpanchang.com lists all four Prahar durations for staunch Shiva devotees who perform Shiva Pujan four times in the night. We also list Nishita time when Lord Shiva appeared on the Earth in the form of Linga and the time window to break the fast on next day.
Shivaratri is also spelled as Shivratri, Shivarathri and Sivaratri.

Lord Krishna says, ‘I remain untouched by all karma and its fruits’.
Think of a person who is sitting on a train and looking outside the window. The scenery from the window keeps changing, but this person simply sits and watches it all go by. Stations keep coming one after another, yet this person is simply sitting, observing it all. He does not interfere in the changes that are happening outside.
He does not say, ‘Oh, this scenery should not be there’. He knows that saying this is of no use because it will not change what is happening outside. So in this way, he sits and observes everything with a sense of apathy.
Lord Krishna says, ‘I observe everything (all actions) with a sense of apathy, as Nature goes about doing its job. I am not attached to anything that happens because I know the nature of the three Gunas (Satguna, Rajoguna and Tamoguna). It is me who has created these Gunas and their nature. They operate as per the Divine laws designed by Me. So when they are functioning as per the laws that govern them, why should I interfere in their function? So I remain detached from the play of the three Gunas and simply observe everything that happens’.
There is consciousness deep within every person. Everything is operating because of this consciousness, which is why, whatever we do, we are also a witness to that action as well. (This is because it is the consciousness that is the source cause of all action). There is this feeling that it is all just happening.
Whenever you do some very good work, you feel, ‘I did not do anything. Everything simply happened on its own (through me)’.
For example, you achieved a great task and everyone praises you for completing it, yet you feel that ‘I did not do anything. It all happened on its own. It is God who did everything (meaning to feel a sense of non-doership)’.

What is the significance of #21 in the worship of Lord Ganesha?
On the day of Ganesha Chaturthi festival, there is a tradition of worshiping Lord Ganesha with 21 different varieties of leaves called Ekavimshati Pathra Pooja. Ekavimshati is a Sanskrit word meaning 21 (5+5+5+5+1); five (5) organs of perception (Gnanendriya) + five (5) organs of action (Karmendriya) + five (5) Pancha Praana (Vital energy forces) + five (5) basic elements of nature (Pancha Bhootha) + the Mind, add up to 21.
Pancha Gnaanendriyas: Nose (Ghruunam/smell), Tongue (Jihva/taste), Eyes (Chakshuh/sight), Skin (Twak/touch) and Ear (srothra/sound) are collectively known as Pancha Gnanendriyas or five sensory organs.
Pancha Karmendriyas: Upastha (genital organs/organs of procreation); Paayuh (excretory organs); Paada (legs); Paani (hands); and Vaak (Vaageendriya/organs of speech) are collectively known as Pancha Karmendriyas or organs of action (karma).
Panchamahaa Bhoothas: Aakaasa (sky/ether); Vaayu (air); Jala (water); Agni (tejas/fire); and Pruthvi (earth); collectively are known as Panchamahaa-Bhoothaas; the five basic elements of nature.
Pancha Praana (Vaayu): Praana (vital life force); Apaana (excretive); Vyaana (circulative); Udhaana (upward movement); Samaana (digestive) are the five vital energy forces required for the physiological functioning of the body.
5+1=6. It is believed that Lord Ganesha took birth in Hastha Nakshathra which comes under the zodiac sign Virgo (Kanya raasi) which is the natural 6th house starting from Aries. Number (6) also signifies the Ari-Shadvargas.
Ari means enemy; Shad-Varga means six factions. Kaama (lust, craze, desire), Krodha (anger, hatred), Lobha (greed, miserliness, narrow minded), Moha (delusory emotional attachment), Mada or Ahankara (pride, stubborn mindedness), Maatsarya (envy, jealousy, show or vanity, and pride) are the Arishadvargas. Also known as Shadripu (six enemies); Shoka (sorrow); Moha (temptation), Jara (old age); Mrityu (death); Kshudha (hunger); and Pipaasa (thirst) are known as Shad-Urmi;
These six waves of excitement (emotional and physical feelings) are internal enemies which are negative passions of mankind, responsible for all kinds of difficult experiences in our lives. These negative characters prevent mankind from realizing the ultimate reality. When these negative passions overrule, egoism gets manifested which is the biggest enemy of humans. A man with egoism becomes self centered and ignorant of his surroundings.
In Bhagawadgeeta (Chapter-2; sloka # 62 & 63) Lord Sri Krishna says that when a man things of objects, attachment for them arises, from attachment desire is born, from desire arises anger, from anger comes delusion, from delusion loss of memory, from loss of memory destruction of discrimination and from destruction of discrimination man perishes. As Lord of wisdom and knowledge (discriminative) Lord Ganesha helps in overcoming the negative passions (Arishadvargas) and in fighting with internal as well as external enemies of mankind.
Moon is the ruling planet of number (2) who is known as Mano-kaaraka signifying the mind and is the star lord of Hastha constellation. Also, Virgo sign partly houses the Uttara Phalguni Nakshathra whose star Lord is Sun representing number (1) one. Sun is the ruling planet of number (1); Mercury that of number (5) and the combination of Sun + Mercury give a yoga in astrology called Budha-Aaditya Yoga resulting in high intelligence and skill. Lord Ganesha is worshipped as the overseeing Lord for the mind and intelligence. Number (1) signifies independence; leadership etc; Lord Ganesha is worshipped as Ganapathi leader of all Ganas (divine groups) and is independent of others Vinaayaka.
2+1=3. In Hindu philosophy number three represents AUM (OM) in its diagrammatic aspect considered to be primordial. Lord Sri Maha Ganapathi is said to be an embodiment of Omkaaram (Pranava Swaroopam) which is primordial to all the Veda Manthras. Lord Ganesha (Aakaasa Tattva) is worshipped assumed as a form of Lord Vishnu (Viswambara Moorthy) the primordial person who is omnipresent.
Suklaambaradharam Vishnum SasiVarnam Chathurbhujam
PrasannaVadanam Dhyaayet Sarva Vighnopashaanthaye
Number three (3) is considered as a highly sacred number that represents the Trinal Lords Brahma, Vishnu, Maheshwara and their energies Saraswathi, Lakshmi and Paarvathi. Known as Trimoorthi (Trinity) they are highly revered in Hindu philosophy. Jupiter also known as Bruhaspathi the Dev Guru (divine preceptor) is the ruling planet of number (3) and is Vidya kaaraka the significant for Vidya (education). Jupiter is considered as the largest planet in the solar system. In Hindu philosophy Lord Ganesha is worshipped as the lord of learning and patron of letters. As elderly God (Jyeshtaraajam); Lord Ganesha is worshiped and offered obeisance first before commencement of any pooja/ritual in Hindu sampradaya.

A normal person who you see before you, one day dies and disappears, and you are left wondering where this person went! Even though his body is still there, where has his Chetna (consciousness) gone?
Lord Krishna says, ‘After death, it (a person’s consciousness) merges into Me (the soul merges with the Lord). It dissolves into Me and when the appropriate time comes, once again I grant life and a physical body to the soul (here referring to the Jiva or the individual being) as per the nature of its karmas. I then place it in the appropriate womb for it to be born once again. So through my material nature I create this cosmic creation again and again’.
He says, ‘That from which all of creation is born out of, and into which all of creation dissolves into again and again; that elemental Tattva is the Paramatma Tattva (most fundamental element or principle)’.
The leaves, fruits and trees ultimately dissolve after dying. They dissolve back into Prakruti (nature) from where they are born once again. In the same way, the human body also decays and dissolves, and then (the soul) gets a new body once again according to the nature of its karmas. In this way the cycle of nature continues.
Mostly good traits,
hardly any negatives.
Good for the country.
NARENDRA MODI
----------------------------------------------------------
1. Vadnagar, an ancient town that’s almost 2,500 years old, is Narendra Damordas Mulchand Modi’s birthplace.
2. Modi was born on September 17, 1950. He makes it a point to take the blessings of his mother Heeraben on his birthday. He bonds reasonably well with his four brothers and sister but doesn’t display it in public. His wife's name is Jashoda, and the couple separated soon after marriage.
3. The most striking personal habit of Modi is to wear well-ironed and wrinkle-free clothes, He continues to lay stress on dressing well and, judging by his public appearances over the last couple of years he owns hundreds of kurtas, all of them tailored in a posh shop on Ahmedabad’s CG Road. Everyone knows that he is crazy about wrist watches and sandals.
4. Modi is a cleanliness maniac. He keeps his desk, his home and general surroundings spic and span.
5. He can be dubbed one of the best copywriters in contemporary India. No Indian advertising agency is likely to match his ability to paraphrase ideas, launch new brands, re-launch people and events, write-rewrite copies to sell ideas or products as he does.
6. In closed-door meetings he likes multi-media presentations. He has a flair for technology.
7. He is extremely prudent in money matters, and would like to pay the least and get the most while finalising contracts of various ministries.
8. These days his weight veers around 84 kg. He gets back-pain at times, with the upper part of the spinal region being the problem area. But, no, he doesn’t have any serious health problems.
9. Has spent enough time in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh so his language, nuances of behaviour and expressions can never be Western His knowledge of English is adequate but he is not comfortable speaking it.
10. Those who believe in astrology may like to know that Modi’s moon sign is Scorpio, and sun sign is Virgo. His star constellation is Anuradha. He was born at 11 am on September 17, 1950. He has even served tea in his maternal uncle’s canteen at the bus stand in Ahmedabad while studying in college.
11. He fasts all nine days during Navratra every year – eating only one fruit a day during this time.
12. He logs on to the internet every morning without fail and checks all that is written about him. Even if he is travelling, he gets newspapers and cuttings of what his critics are saying about him.
13. He is the decision-maker.. He will not send any decision to a Group of Ministers.
14. Modi has no ‘best friend’. He is a loner.
15. Modi is married but never lived with his wife. Since long he has been trusting Anandiben Patel, a minister and among his likely successors if he shifts to Delhi. However, he guards his privacy zealously.
16. Modi is workaholic. He attends office early in the morning, and works till 10 pm if need be.
17. Oh yes, he is in love with the mirror. He poses like a model. He is very conscious of pictures that are sent out from his publicity office.
18. He sleeps for only five hours -- sometimes even less. Whatever time he hits the bed, he gets up at 5 or 5.30 am.
19. He has written poems of low literary value.
20. His icon is Swami Vivekanand. He strangely admires Indira Gandhi.
21. Modi was incommunicado when he was 17 and 18. He left his family and went to Rajkot’s Ramakrishna mission and to the Belur Math in West Bengal and then to the Himalayas.
22. His favourite food is bhakhri (crispy rotis) and khichdi made in Gujarati style. Modi knows to cook, too.
23 He is a hard task-master and treats government officers as tools to achieve his political goals.
24. There is no doubt that he played communal politics in the last three Gujarat elections. He is like most national leaders -- from Indira Gandhi to Nitish Kumar -- opportunistic, which drives him to play identity politics for the sake of power.
25 He has won so far because he knows the usefulness and uselessness of everyone around him. Two, he recognises time and its value. He strikes when it’s his time and bends otherwise.
26 No one should have any doubt that if at all he fulfills his dream of becoming prime minister he will turn New Delhi topsy-turvy. He will make bureaucrats work and will be a dictator who will ensure the implementation of his decisions.

Sundar Vakya from Ramayan
1- Sabse badi shakti man ki hai, parantu man ek chanchal ghode ki bhanti kabhi sthir nahi rehta. Yog ke dwara chitra vrattiyon ka virodh karke jo man ko kabu kar leta hai, uska man sarv vyapi aatma ke aadheen hone se wo sansaar ki samast shaktiyon par adhikar paa leta hai.
2- Apne karm ki achhayi aur burai ko har ghadi har samay parkhte rehna chahiye. Apne karm ko parkhne ke liye manushya ke paas ek hi kasauti hai- wo ye soche ki yadi mai issi samay mar jaayun to mera ye karm kis ginti me aayega. Isliye yadi koi bhool ho jaaye to use tatkaal sudhar lena chahiye. Ye kabhi na sochna chahiye ki aaj ki bhool ko kal sudhar loonga, kyonki kabhi kabhi “Kaal” kal ka samay nhi deta.
3- Dharm ke marg par chalne k liye gyan ka prakash aawashyak hai. Yadi gyan ka prakash na ho to andhkaar purn marg par Dharm ek andhe ki bhanti bhatak sakta hai.
4- Jahan jeewan hai wahin Mratyu hai, jahan mangal hai wahin amangal bhi sath khada hai. Kewal Sukh ko pakadne jayoge to usi ki chhaya me Dukh ko bhi khada payoge. Atah jo dukh aur sukh dono se virakt hokar aatma me leen hota hai, wahi shashwat aanad ko paata hai aur usi ko Mukti kehte hai.
5- Jaise varsha ka jal sabhi ped paudho par ek saman girta hai, parntu kisi ke laal phool nikalte hai aur kisi ke peele. Isi prakar ek hi vidya ka bhinn bhinn pradiyon par unke sanskaar aur swabhav ke anusaar bhinn bhinn prabhav padta hai.
6- Patthar par liye shabd kabhi nhi mit te, parantu paani par likha kshad bhar bhi nhi rehta. Man me krodh aur shatruta ko utni der hi rakhna chahiye jitni der paani par likha reh sakta hai.
7- Dhan ke atirikt bhi insaan kuch aur de sakta hai- ek meetha sabd, ek pyaar bhari muskaan, aur uska mol to Dhan se bhi adhik hai.
8- Har ek prani bhagwaan ka awataar hai, parantu wo apni hi maaya ke jaal me bhans kar apne aapko nhi pehchanta. Is maya jaal se Swayam ko pehchaan kar prani mukta ho sakta hai. Apne bhagwat swaroop ko jaankar swayam hi apne aapko phasata hai aur swayam hi mukti ka sadhan puchhta phirta hai. Yahi to mayapati ki maaya hai.
