Mangalvar Ki Katha-2
Tuesday is dedicated to Lord Hanuman. In South India, the day is dedicated to Skanda, aka Muruga or Kartikeya. Devotees also listen to Hanuman Chalisa, songs dedicated to the simian deity, on this day. Mangalvar Vrat is observed by those couples who wish to have a son. Other benefits include happiness in the family. People who believe in astrology observe fast to destroy the harmful effects associated with the planet mangal or Mars.
This story is about a lady who was living happily by observing fast on Tuesdays. On every Tuesday, she used to get four loaves from her daughter-in-law. She offered two loaves in the temple and ate the other two with a feeling of satisfaction.
When her daughter-in-law came to know that the lady broke her fast by eating two loaves and offering the other two loaves to Lord Hanuman, she decided to cook two loaves only.
Now on the next Tuesday the daughter-in-law gave her only two loaves. Out of these two loaves, the old lady offered one loaf to Lord Hanuman and broke her fast with the remaining one.
When her daughter-in-law came to know about this, she again thought that the old lady was actually wasting one loaf. So the daughter-in-law now started giving her only one loaf.
Now when the old lady got only one loaf from her daughter-in-law on the next Tuesday, she offered half of the loaf to Lord Hanuman and broke her fast with the remaining half loaf. When the old lady's daughter-in-law came to know about this, she decided not to give the old lady any loaf as she was wasting her family expenses.
When the old lady didn't receive any loaf from her daughter-in-law, she went to the temple empty handed. After looking at the condition of the old lady, Lord Hanuman came in the form of a young boy and asked her about her problem. The old lady related the whole story to the boy.
The young boy asked the lady to build a cottage behind the temple and not to worry about the food as the boy told her that he will arrange the food for the old lady. The young boy didn't want her to live in a family where no one respected her.
The old lady started living in the cottage. Every day the young boy would bring a mug full of milk and a lump of crushed bread mixed with sugar and butter (churma) for her. Her life was now very happy and peaceful. On the other hand the old lady's daughter-in-law became poorer and poorer day by day.
One day she asked her children to go and observe their grandmother. After looking at her grandchildren, the old lady greeted them with milk and choorma and even asked them to visit her daily.
After hearing the whole story of the old lady, her daughter-in-law wanted to bring back the old lady as she had realized her mistake now. But her husband refused to go as his wife was the cause of all the quarrels in the family. She was the one who was jealous of the meals of the old lady and the day the old lady left their home all the prosperity went away.
In the end they decided that all of them will together go to the old woman to bring back the old lady. When they went to the old lady, they saw the young boy who was serving food to the old lady.
The old lady's daughter-in-law fell at the feet of her mother-in-law and felt sorry for her mistakes. The old lady then asked the young boy if she should go with her family members as they had realized their mistakes now. Now even the boy wanted her to go but asked her to come back if she faced any difficulty there.
The old lady returned to her home and now her daughter-in-law never objected to give her food on the day of her fast. All the prosperity and wealth again came back to their house.
