Mangalvar Ki Katha
Once there was a Brahmans son who got married at an early age. When he went back to his village to bring back his wife, his in laws greeted him heartily and also offered him some good dishes to eat. He told his father-in-law about the bad condition of his mother because of which he needed to take back his wife, to take care of his mother.
His father-in-law objected by saying that they were not well prepared to give him enough clothes and cash. The boy refused to his offers and wanted to take his wife along with him. The boy’s mother-in-law was also worried about her daughter’s safety during the journey as she was wearing heavy jewelers.
The boy answered them by showing off his strong body, and that he was strong enough to protect his wife from every kind of danger. Now after thinking for some time, all of them agreed to send their daughter along with the boy.
They finally started their journey on Tuesday, the day devoted to Mars as Mars is considered to be the commander of the day. The Mars saw the Brahmans beautiful wife and was amazed to see her beauty. He knew witchcraft. He disguised himself as a Brahmans son and said to the boy that she was his wife and the boy must leave her or he will kill him.
When the boy saw the identical man like him, he was amazed. The boy shouted that he was a ghost, a cheat!!! The woman was not able to differentiate between the two boys and could not decide with whom to go. When some people heard of their quarrel, they went to them to ask about the cause of the quarrel.
The Brahmans son was shouting to claim her as his wife on one side while on the other side the other man was also shouting to claim himself as the real one, the real husband of the lady. Looking at the situation, people were also confused at the story. So they asked the lady about whom she was married to.
Since the lady was married when she was very young and moreover, she had seen her husband for the first time after a long time, she was not able to distinguish between the two men. The matter was becoming more and more complicated.
One of the persons standing nearby could sense that one out of the two men was a spirit and the good thing was that, she knew how to deal with the spirits. He said; bring an earthen pot with a spout. I will hand over this lady to the real husband. They arranged a Kuchcha Karva or a pot with a spout. He then said this lady belongs to that person who can enter this pot through its spout.
The Brahmans son could not enter the pot and refused to it as it was not possible for a normal man to enter into a pot. People confirmed him as a cheat as he did not obey the rules. But Mars said that for his wife, he will enter the pot. The nearby people said that if he entered the pot, he will get the lady.
Mars could change his body shape and so he entered into the pot. As soon as he entered the pot, the people nearby closed the pot with a tight cork. Now Mars was locked into the pot and was not able to come out of it. Everyone then dug a deep hole in the ground and put the pot inside it. The Brahmans son thanked the people for his intelligence.
Since that day it is believed that no one should dig earth on Tuesday as Mars could come out of it.
